English Abstract:
This study examines the contributions of the Fulani (Fodio) movement to the development and dissemination of education and scholarship in West Africa, focusing on the jihad led by Usman dan Fodio (d. 1817) and the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate. It situates the movement within broader debates on Islamic intellectual history in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly scholarly interpretations of its educational traditions, modes of knowledge transmission, and relationship with the wider Islamic world. The study explores the intellectual foundations of the Fodio educational model, the production and circulation of written scholarship, the role of women in educational and intellectual activities, and the methods employed to transmit religious and scholarly knowledge. It also considers the use of Ajami, the adaptation of Arabic script to African languages, as a medium of written communication and knowledge dissemination. The study argues that the Fodio movement contributed to the development of educational and scholarly networks that connected West Africa with broader Islamic intellectual traditions. It further examines the historical continuity of this legacy and its relevance to the study of Islamic education and scholarship in modern West Africa.
