English Abstract:
Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim Al-Maghili Al-Tilimsani (D. 909 AH/1503 CE) was one of the most prominent scholars of the Islamic Maghreb whose influence extended significantly to the religious and political life of the Western Sudan during the ninth century AH. He combined scholarship, religious preaching, and reform, contributing to the consolidation of Islamic legal principles, the reform of religious beliefs, and the dissemination of Islamic sciences and the Arabic language. He also played a prominent role in advising rulers and laying the foundations of governance based on justice and consultation (shura), particularly through his scholarly writings and correspondence, most notably his letters to Askia Muhammad. This study aims to highlight Imam Al-Maghili’s contributions to religious and political reform, analyze his reformist methodology, and examine his impact on the development of Muslim society and the Islamic state in the Western Sudan. The study adopts the historical method to trace his life and the events of his era, the descriptive method to present his scholarly and reformist contributions, and the analytical method to assess his views and demonstrate their impact on the religious and political realities of his time. The study concludes that Imam Al-Maghili represented a model of the reformist scholar whose role extended beyond teaching and authorship to advising rulers and contributing to the reform of state institutions. His efforts consequently contributed to strengthening Islamic identity and consolidating the principles of good governance in the Western Sudan. His intellectual legacy therefore merits further scholarly investigation and offers valuable insights for addressing contemporary issues of religious and political reform.
