GLOBAL AND NATIONAL CHALLENGES FACING MUSLIMS: AN ISLAMIC ANALYSIS WITH REFERENCE TO NIGERIA.

This paper explores the multifaceted challenges facing Islam and Muslims both globally and in Nigeria, aiming to offer a nuanced understanding and propose Islamic grounded solutions. It identifies six key challenges: at the global level—Islamaphobia, geopolitical conflicts involving Muslims, and misrepresentation in Western media; and within Nigeria—sectarian divisions among Muslims, politicization of religion, and the poor representation of Islam in public discourse. Drawing from academic literature, Qur’anic guidance, and contemporary socio-political analysis, the paper adopts a thematic approach to critically examine the roots and consequences of these issues on Muslim identity, unity, and societal cohesion. The analysis reveals that Islam phobia is often fueled by biased media portrayals and political rhetoric, while intra-Muslim tensions and manipulation by political elites undermine unity and development within Nigerian Muslim communities. Additionally, structural inequalities and lack of proper Islamic education further aggravate misunderstanding and extremism. Proposed solutions include global initiatives such as interfaith dialogue, investment in Muslim education, and stronger Muslim representation in media. Nationally, the study recommends reforming Islamic curricula, promoting community-based peace building, and ensuring political accountability for religious incitement. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts among scholars, religious leaders, policymakers, and lay Muslims to uphold justice, truth, and unity in addressing these challenges. Through practical and balanced solutions, the Ummah can reclaim its role as a force for moral guidance and peaceful coexistence in a rapidly changing world.
English Abstract:
يتناول هذا البحث التحديات المتعددة الأبعاد التي تواجه الإسلام والمسلمين على المستويين العالمي والوطني، مع التركيز على نيجيريا، بهدف تقديم فهم علمي متوازن واقتراح حلول مستندة إلى مبادئ الإسلام. ويحدد البحث ستة تحديات رئيسة؛ فعلى المستوى العالمي تتمثل في الإسلاموفوبيا، والصراعات الجيوسياسية المرتبطة بالمسلمين، والصورة السلبية للإسلام في وسائل الإعلام الغربية. أما على المستوى الوطني في نيجيريا فتتمثل في الانقسامات المذهبية بين المسلمين، وتسييس الدين، وضعف تمثيل الإسلام في الخطاب العام. واعتمدت الدراسة المنهج الموضوعي، مستندة إلى الأدبيات الأكاديمية، والتوجيهات القرآنية، والتحليل الاجتماعي والسياسي المعاصر، لفحص جذور هذه التحديات وآثارها في الهوية الإسلامية، ووحدة المسلمين، والتماسك المجتمعي. وتبين النتائج أن الإسلاموفوبيا تغذيها الصور النمطية المنحازة في وسائل الإعلام والخطابات السياسية، في حين تسهم الخلافات الداخلية بين المسلمين واستغلال النخب السياسية للدين في إضعاف الوحدة والتنمية داخل المجتمعات الإسلامية في نيجيريا. كما تؤدي أوجه القصور في التعليم الإسلامي والتفاوتات الهيكلية إلى تعميق سوء الفهم ونمو مظاهر التطرف. ويقترح البحث مجموعة من الحلول، من أبرزها تعزيز الحوار بين أتباع الأديان، والاستثمار في التعليم الإسلامي، وتحسين تمثيل المسلمين في وسائل الإعلام، إلى جانب إصلاح المناهج الإسلامية، وتعزيز مبادرات بناء السلام المجتمعي، وترسيخ المساءلة السياسية تجاه التحريض الديني. ويخلص البحث إلى أن مواجهة هذه التحديات تتطلب تعاونًا وثيقًا بين العلماء، والقادة الدينيين، وصناع القرار، وعامة المسلمين، بما يسهم في ترسيخ قيم العدل والحق والوحدة، واستعادة الأمة الإسلامية لدورها الحضاري في نشر الهداية الأخلاقية والتعايش السلمي في عالم سريع التغير.
